How it all started

After many years of training dogs I decided to try my hand at showing. I couldn't decide on a large breed, until I saw a Harlequin Great Dane! I was awestruck by this magnificent animal and was hooked. (Little did I know at the time that this dog was the illustrious multiple BIS winner Ch. McDayne Shaka of Rheingau.)

After a lot of research and a long wait I obtained my first Dane from a very special lady and longtime quality Dane breeder, Janet Rossouw of Chardonee Great Danes in Cape Town. Chardonee Galileo (Zinzan) is a dream come true. His German type and flawless temperament were exactly what I was looking for.

I was also lucky enough to meet and get to know Michele and Sven Petersson, breeders of the world famous Int. Ch. Chapala Sherman. Between the two of them they have taught me more about the Great Dane than I could ever have thought possible. My eternal gratitude to both Michele and Sven for their wisdom, experience and patience.

My special boy Zinzan - one of a kind.

The purpose of the Great Dane

Great Danes were developed in Germany to hunt wild boar in packs. Although they are classified in the Working Group in South Africa, as they were also used for guarding, I believe the Great Dane to be a hound.

So much for the savage boar hunters!

Today's Great Dane

As a giant breed the Great Dane's most important feature is its temperament. A dog this size would be very dangerous if it were not of sound mind. Irresponsible breeders are creating a serious problem with our breed by not including temperament as a crucial part of their breeding activities.

Thanks to his outstanding temperament, Zinzan has won many fans
